In the morning of December 9th 2017, Coteccons’ blue-tee volunteers were present at Nguyen Trai Hospital (District 1, HCMC) to bring "light gifts" to more than 250 patients from the Central and South West provinces.
Waiting in front of the surgery centre from early morning, there were not only expecting eyes but also anxious faces. Nguyen Thi Be, 55 years old, from Tan Chau, An Giang, said: "I am very poor. I have had cataracts for nearly a year. I‘m having a complementary surgery today. I am not only happy but also nervous”. She was one of 250 cataracts and meat eye patients who had come from the remote areas to Ho Chi Minh City since early morning to have free-of-charge surgical procedure.
Report on HTV9 Television "Open arms - opportunities for poor patients"
Even when it was cold outside; on the corridor of Nguyen Trai high-tech eye hospital, we felt the enthusiasm was gradually spreading. Over 20 volunteers in blue t-shirts were changing bandages, dropping eye-drop, and guiding patients to the operating room. They rotated to support the surgeons and delivered each sick-barrier the necessities as a going-home gifts. The motivating stories outside the operating room had brought suburban people from Phu Yen, Vung Tau or Ca Mau closer together.
We felt the fatigue of the patients from long-distance travel had disappeared, all that left were the happiness of being cured and readiness for a warm upcoming New Year.
Dr. Tran Thanh Long, President of the HCM City Sponsoring Association for Poor Patient (SAPP), spoke "The support of charitable donors and volunteers helps many poor patients recover from illnesses and get better lives. That is a very precious deep for the poor during year-end days. "
What can be more wonderful than a life with healthy eyes to admire the our loved ones. By having honours to present patients the light gifts, these volunteers received back happy smiles, grateful closed hand. For the Coteccons, there is no such meaningful weekend as that.
The free eye surgery program of bringing normal eyes to poor patients who have cataracts has been organized by the Coteccons Trade Union together with the High-Tech Eye Dept. of Nguyen Trai Hospital and SAPP. In 2017, there are nearly 450 fully complementary operations that brings light and joy to hundreds of difficult circumstances in the Central and South of Vietnam.
